Short Story
JoBecks Farms (SL) Limited is a growing agribusiness with a focus on the poultry value chain of raising broilers for poultry meat production, layers for poultry eggs production, poultry feed supply, egg box production, and other related businesses. The recycled egg box manufacturing aspect of the business comes from the adverse shortage of egg trays locally to meet the demand for locally produced poultry eggs and the importation of egg trays that are reused by poultry farmers for market use. There is one type of packaging egg tray which is the 30-cavity egg tray available nationwide which is a challenge to retailers such as supermarkets and Fula shops whose customers mainly prefer to buy small quantities of six, twelve, or eighteen, who are left with no option but to tear up the 30-cavity trays to be able to sell to their customers. This poses a sustainability threat to local farmers as the number of egg trays available for reuse drastically drops as more and more trays are destroyed in the retail aspect of the business. JoBecks Farms is working to produce smaller-sized cavity egg boxes of 6 and 12 that will allow consumers to purchase these quantities and increase the sustainable supply of egg boxes in the market.Â

Target Goal
Campaign End Method
No local egg box/ tray production in Sierra Leone for poultry farming causing;
- Shortage of Egg packaging materials and unsustainable, inadequate supply
- High risk of disease transmission like typhoid etc.
- Unhygienic collection and reuse of imported eggs.
 Air pollution/ greenhouse gas emission that is caused by the burning of waste papers.
OUR SOLUTION
Jobecks Farms solution to the problem are;
- Â Producing local pulp egg packaging material recycled from waste papers.
- Provide convenient disposal of used waste papers and this reduces the greenhouse gasses in the environment.
WHY IS IT IMPROTANT TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?
Agribusiness in Sierra Leone and the poultry industry are highly dependent on the sustainable availability of input for production locally. Joe Beck’s farm’s aim is to provide much-needed packaging materials that can reduce the cost of production across the board. Waste paper is a big problem in our areas because of poor disposal that is causing clogging gutters and dirty streets, etc. The collection and processing of waste paper into sustainable recycling packaging materials will help reduce flooding and unsightly streets and greenhouse gas emission in the environment. This will also provide job opportunities for young women and youth in the Songo area which is our operation location.
WHY ARE WE CROWDFUNDING?
We are running this campaign to source funds to procure equipment and machines, to make this dream a reality.

The poultry industry is a growing industry in Sierra Leone that is faced with many challenges. One such challenge is the availability of packaging materials for the storage and transport of eggs from the farm to the wholesaler or consumer. As the industry continues to grow, the need for egg boxes and trays continues to grow and if there is no local production of packaging materials we will still depend on imported egg trays to meet the market demand.This will cause a negative impact to the growth of the industry as the only other option will be the importation of egg boxes to meet the market demand.Â
